New Year, New You … One of the silliest sayings ever.

Why do we do this to ourselves!? New Year’s resolutions- making unrealistic drastic changes in our everyday routines and expecting ourselves to immediately be something we are not? Humans aren’t wired like that. We become who we are after routinely doing whatever that something is or isn’t and making a habit of it. For those who don’t work out, it’s been routine not to, so it’s very hard to just start a new habit of doing so and sticking to it. Same for those who eat junk food, or sleep in too late, or whatever it is. It took time forming and allowing that habit so it immediately expecting our human minds to undo that is just silly. And, on top of that, we beat ourselves up for not easily undoing what we don’t like about ourselves.

Instead, how about we start the new year, or anytime in life when you want a refresh, and come up with a word you want to live by for the coming year and beyond. For example, prosperity, healthy, kindness, invest, courage, generosity, strength, etc. This gives you something to incorporate into your every day, which will ultimately help you reach the new goals you have for yourself especially if you align your new word or mantra with what your goals are.

If your goal is to save money and you choose a word like “invest”, then you can focus your energy on investing in others and investing your money by saving. This is two-fold and doing both actions will lead to more personal growth and happiness. Same goes for “strength”. You can lean into being strong during difficult situations, being strong for those around you that need it, and building physical strength, which ties into getting more fit. You get the point here. 😊 By doing this, we are working toward healthy lifestyle and personality adjustments, not hard and fast changes to who we are at our core.

So instead of forcing yourself to be a “new you” in the new year, focus on what matters and what you can actually accomplish! Less intense pressure leads to achieving more and feeling better while doing it, which will ultimately help you make the changes you desire.

Cheers to the “New You”… kidding. I couldn’t help myself. 😉 Now go get WELLTHY!
